Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

Drinking water supply and sanitation facilities across rural Balochistan are mostly non-existent. The situation of sanitation in the province also shows a bleak picture as only 42.80% (Urban: 62.70%  & Rural: 22.90%) population has access to safe disposal of excreta Sanitation, while the rest of 80% poorest households practice open defecation. Only 10% households have access to proper disposal of waste water and 5% of Balochistan’s populations have facilities and services available for proper disposal of solid waste. (MICS Balochistan Report)

BRSP's goal in WASH is, therefore, to reduce poverty and vulnerability by improving the health status of the population through ensuring improved access to clean drinking water, improved sanitation and hygiene practices.

BRSP has successfully demonstrated a unique model of Public-Private Partnership in WASH projects across the province with close coordination of PHED, LG&RDD and Education Department. These projects focused on restoring existing water facilities through increased access of target beneficiaries towards improved drinking water and sanitation services with better hygiene practices. Furthermore, extensive Behavioural Change Communication (BCC) campaigns also brought visible changes in hygiene practices among targeted communities. WASH in Schools (WiNS), reactivation and restructuring of Parent Teacher School Management Committees (PTSMCs) helped in supervision of WASH interventions in consultation with staff of Education Department and parents through formation of WASH Clubs. Whereas unprecedentedly, BRSP also promoted Menstruation Hygiene Management (MHM) through provision of hygiene Kits in girls’ schools.

In collaboration with PHED, and as per the communities' needs, BRSP has implemented a total of 1,1890 (615 small, 574 medium & large scale) DWSSs that benefited 958,696 individuals (446,804 men and 479,689 women and 32,203 children). WASH facilities were also provided/rehabilitated in 523 schools/
madariss in different areas of Balochistan benefiting a total of 160,314 teachers & students.
