Consultative workshop held on Universal Birth Registration
Local Government and Rural Development department Balochistan in collaboration with Balochistan Rural Support Program (BRSP) and Plan Pakistan organized a consultative workshop on 19th November, 2009 on Universal Birth Registration at Quetta Serena hotel. The workshop was attended by the officials of provincial department of local government & rural development, Social welfare, representatives from local and international organizations, media representatives and members of the civil society.
The event titled “one day consultative workshop on Universal Birth registration” was organized prior to the Balochistan Child Birth registration project that will be launched by Plan Pakistan in collaboration Local Government & Rural development department in the year 2010. The participants of the workshop shared their insights about the implementation of the birth registration project and their areas of expertise, target locations and the coverage under relevant sectors. Suggestions were also made by the participants based upon their experiences. The participants were asked by the organizers to come up with their organization’s profile containing geographical presence, areas of expertise and implementation strategy.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Qazi Shahid Pervez, Secretary Local Government and Rural Development department Balochistan said that the percentage of birth registration in Balochistan is very low and requires focused interventions. He also emphasized the importance of social mobilization in rural areas that can contribute to the behavior change of parents in the province. Mr. Qazi further said that the capacity of the secretary at the union council level should be enhanced on the process of child birth registration. He recommended that the UC secretaries may be provided with financial incentives and benefits on performance basis. Mr. Khalid Alizai Director General, NADRA was also present on the occasion. Mr. Alizai said that the technical support of NADRA will always be there in the provision of software at the union council level in 567 UCs of Balochistan which will help maintain the registration data electronically through NADRA managed software.
At the end of the workshop, Mr. Qazi Shahid Pervez thanked all the distinguished participants for their active participation and hoped that such interventions will help to strengthen the public private partnership in the province.
